If you’ve never gone, then go.

Day one. Well, thought we’d set off early Wednesday morning. 15 hours later, at 11.55pm, we had set up camp and finally had the first festival can of Strongbow in our hands. Oh and it was Stus birthday too and it was his first of the day so we postponed his birthday till Thursday.

Day Two. Stus birthday. Drank a lot. Wondered about excitedly, finally settling down on the top of the hill by the stone circle, kind of stunned by the scale of the place. Took some photos and soaked it in. Took a while. Later on we went to see Maximo Park but you couldn’t get near the tent so we decided to go and wait for Zane Lowe to do this thing. Turns out that was an excellent choice as he was ace. I wasn’t aware he was so good at actually DJ’ing. Im on board. Great start to the evening, which kinda ended with a knife threat from the man making people out of sand. Someone fell over then decided to do a “Klinsmann” in the nearest patch of mud. Idiot. Oh and it also ended with Stu purchasing the best hat I have ever seen. It truly was a day that had it all. Good times.

Day Three. Bands started playing. I wanted to see The Whip and The Rakes but couldn’t get off my airbed so I didn’t see them. Watched The Maccabees while we got our faces painted blue. Wondered off to catch the special guests that we’re N*E*R*D. You cant beat anything off that first album and Rockstar always goes down an absolute storm. Watched some White Lies, who actually weren’t that memorable for me. Had to see some of the lovely Lily Allen, but cut her short for some Dan Le Sac Vs Scoobius Pip. They got a good crowd and so they should, didn’t play Tommy C though! We then stayed for The Virgins with about fifty other people. They were good though. Later we went to see the true legends that are The Specials, who actually put most of the bands half their age to shame. We then navigated our way to the Avalon where we were to see British Sea Power. One of my favourite bands and they never disappoint live. They were the highlight of the day for me, and this was a day that included The Specials, N*E*R*D and later Doves. They are a real top class band who have a brilliant set of fans. They’re the best kept secret I’ve ever known. Then we lost control and somehow managed to just catch the end of Doves. Bit gutted I didn’t see more of them, but we’re were in rather a mess.

Day Four started much like day three. Wanted to see Eagles of Death Metal and Metric but couldn’t really move. We could hear the Other Stage from where we we’re camped so I managed to hear Metric play which was a little bonus. Saw Dizzle Rascal in anticipation of Bonkers, but we wanted to see Peter Doherty so we missed it. He actually has a lot of great tunes though and he properly got the crowd going. Anyway we saw Fix Up Look Sharp so what more can you ask for. Pete Doherty was good. He seen him playing better, but Albion and ending the set on Time For Heroes means he cant really go wrong. Saw Maximo Park, then went off to see Kasabian who were top class. Serge was wearing the coolest jacket I saw all weekend. Afterwards we settled down at the Pyramid Stage for the boss. He’s the boss.

Day Five. Learnt a little lesson from the previous two days and managed to drag ourselves out the tent in time to watch Two Door Cinema Club, who were good. Suffered from some technical problems but finished well. Went to see Twisted Wheel and then took a gamble with Kissy Sellout. It paid off, they were really good. Also saw Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, They really are a top live band. Had to go and see Madness, who really got the crowd bouncing. Had to cut them short and unfortunately missed baggy trousers, as we wanted to see Bat for Lashes. We didn’t see much but she was good. Went to see big favourites of mine, Glasvegas, who I thought were excellent. Biggest sing along of the weekend for me. Finished the night, and the festival, watching Blur who were brilliant. Perfect end to the weekend really. Got ourselves ready for the Monday morning sunrise at the stone circle. Then it pissed it down so its still not ticked off the list. I’ll have to come back then.

Day Six. Smelt like a horse. Packed everything away. Trudged to the cars and started the drive home, the drive back to reality. Gutted. Fingers crossed for next year.

Next stop. Benicassim.

notimetosleep

The notimetosleep t-shirt. Yes... 10 days! But you know what they say about all work and no play. and you know, we always make time for play! We're well into the music here. You can even follow what we're listening to over at our Last.FM profile.

Peter Doherty, Wednesday 25th March.

Very impressed. Although billed as a Peter Doherty solo show the shambles was not far in tow. We were treated to acoustic performances from Adam Ficek's, (Babyshambles drummer) side project Roses, Kings, Castles which was nice. Drew McConnell was up next and treated us to a rather bizzare but brilliant spanish song or two, with a special guest. Doherty was on good form and was as coherent as I have witnessed him. The band, including special guitarist Graham Coxon, was great. The night went on to include 2 of The La's greatest songs, sung by (forgive my ignorance) the bloke out the La's, including There She Goes. The night finished in more shambolic style with frequent set closer, Fuck Forever. Money well spent.

The Rifles, 27th March.

Seen them before. again, they were very good. loads of blokes jumping up and down, singing all the words! Whether thats good Im not sure but they definatley do have some chant along friendly numbers and you cannot help but enjoy, especially on a Friday night. Also, I have to say that the support was actually quite good after initially thinking they were not. New Education they were called, they might be worth checking out.

The Enemy, 31st March.

Finally got to see Twisted Wheel after missing them numerous times. Unfortunately missed Kid British who we are all loving at the moment, but theres time for them im sure. Twisted Wheel were good, they set the scene for the night well. Loud, agressive, confident. The Enemy are blinding live, that cant be argued, and the new songs sound like they're gonna be around for a while, stepping onto bigger stages. His hairs longer but his mouths still as big. and so's the delivery. and so's the screen behind them!

The clocks have changed. Its T-Shirt time.

notimetosleep time.

Matt

Dont forget to check out of Last.FM page either!

NME Tour, Wednesday 4th February 2009

Popped along to see the much talked about Glasvegas as part of the NME tour at the Carling. Sorry, O2 Academy Birmingham. Tried to get there as early as possible so as not to miss any of the bands, but once again missed the first act, which disappointingly was Florance and the Machine. Later was White Lies and then Friendly Fires before Glasvagas took to the stage. As this was the third time I had seen Glasvegas I was actually more looking forward to Florance and the Machine, but that wasn't to be. I had previously seen White Lies support Glasvegas but was yet again impressed, and being far more familiar with their music these days enjoyed it much more. They have the epic, gothic nature of Glasvegas, but with the pop sensibilities of say, The Editors. A bit serious maybe, but they were good.

Part of me wished Friendly Fires could have been on first, but to be fair they were also really good. They provided relief with dancability and fun. As I am slightly ignorant when it comes to Friendly Fires, shockingly, Jump in the Pool was the highlight for me. Although, there were a few other tunes that sounded good too and proved there might be more to them than pool jumping. Unfortunately the main attraction proved a little disappointing, through no fault of their own, as the sound was, well, terrible. Think a few othere thought the same. I love Glasvegas, their songs are ace. You can almost hear the sound of his soul tearing through his throat in any of their songs, something a lot of bands sadly lack, but im not sure they won over any new fans tonight. I had a great time, Daddy's Gone was brilliant, Lonesome Swan was also probably one of my favourites, but the songs deserved better sound. White Lies the shock highlight! The bar running out of Strongbow again the Disappointment. oh, and the sound.

See you soon, stay awake...

Matt

Bloc Party, Saturday 31st January 2009, Civic Hall

There was some notimetosleep representation at the Bloc Party gig at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, check out their Myspace. Dont worry if you didnt see me, I just popped along cause they are a good band who are good live.

For once I was there early enough to catch the support band, who I have been informed were called, ..., and was fairly impressed. They weren't on for long but treated us to a couple of good numbers, in a Bloc Party pop machine with Brandon Flowers singing kind of way.

There wasnt too much of a wait until the main attraction as Bloc Party strolled on and blinded us with some massive bright lights. The night seemed to carry on in this form, but it was not only the lights that were blinding, the tightness and power of a band on its third album was evident. They seemed relaxed and confident, and rightly so, as they picked out highlights spanning all of the albums. It says something for the strenght of the song, Helicopter, which is still one of the best songs in the set, but its also saying something that Flux is up there battling for that crown as well.

Bloc Party have stocked up a wealth of good material, so much so that they played two encores, but have never failed in moving on and developing their sound. Their early stuff still stands out proud in the set, but is far removed from their newer more powerful, interesting output. You still know its Bloc Party, the melodies are there and the influences are there, but its different, and its better, and that brings hope for tomorrow.

The Cribs, Thursday 7th May 2007, Wulfrun Hall

Dug out this old review from the old website and thought I might as well keep it here. Pure nostalgia. I went to see one of my favourite bands, The Cribs at The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton. Check out their Myspace. I have been a great fan of all three of The Cribs albums, and having been unable to see them in the flesh last year (cause I couldn’t get anyone to go with me!!), I was (shockingly) excited at the prospect of a Thursday night in Wolverhampton, and this time I was more than able to get people to come along. A years a long time.

For many of those unfamiliar with the Cribs, like my best mate who was fairly shocked when he asked me if they had an album out yet and I told him, “yeah, they got three mate!”. “well, im gonna pick em up” he said. And so he should! Anyway, The Cribs really are a band of brothers, a band of three brothers in fact. The Jarman brothers – Ryan (Guitar, Vox), Gary (Bass, Vox), and Ross (Drums). After some decent but unmemorable support act, The Cribs arrive onstage at about 9:30, to a good reception. The venue is as full as I have ever seen it and its clear to see we have the makings of a good night of music. Their opening track I remember being good, although unfortunately it has pailed into, well… somewhere I cant remember, after the band launched into their second track of the evening, and in my eyes the real opening to a show, the thrashing trashy crowd sing, well chant along song that is ‘Hey Scenesters’. Brilliant. There was many stand out tracks to come, including a personal favourite from the first album (‘The New Fellas’), the bouncy ‘Im Alright Me’ and the arm swinging beer swiggin’ fans favourite ‘Martell’. There was only a dash of tracks from the second album (‘The Cribs’), I seem to recall ‘What About Me’ and I can only hope ‘You Were Always The One’ was in there (There was quite a pile of plastic cups under our feet if you know what I mean). This being said, the rightful focus of the evening was on their new album (‘Mens Needs, Womens Needs, Whatever’). In fact I think they played the whole album, including rousing renditions of, my brothers favourite ‘Moving Pictures’, ‘Ancient History’, ‘I’m A Realist’, and my personal favourite ‘I’ve Tried Everything’. Although the obvious stand out track was the single, ‘Mens Needs’, this time with an extended intro. The Cribs had the place rockin’ and by this time I was also well and truly rocking, the cider had well and truly taken its toll and soon it would be time to go.

If you fancy a great evening, with a great band, who have good tunes, in a decent venue, with a good crowd. Then go and check them out, if not, go and get the album. Or do both
